Twenty Twelve

This world lived on. With that, millions of dreams too lived on. On 21st December I stayed late at office. I wouldn’t say that I really had a lot of work to do. But I stayed late.

I am recollecting here a few things that I came across and I did in twenty twelve.

Data scientist: In the past few years I have been noticing the importance that is being given to data and data based decision making at leadership levels. I don’t know how many of the corporates have this position today called exactly by this name. I came across this terminology in LinkedIn news section.

Creative Philanthropy: There was a news article recently in economic times on Shiv Nadar who has pledged one tenth of his personal wealth to philanthropy. And the kind of philanthropy that he is doing is creative philanthropy. The other kind is corrective philanthropy.

Fifty shades series by EL James: I haven’t gathered much courage yet to buy these books home. Every time I visit landmark bookstore I stare at these books and would decide to pick it up the next time.

Chef at Google: I loved it when I read that Google founders hired a chef to cook at Google and each day he made sure that the menu was very different, healthy and yummy. They did this to stop employees going out for lunch resulting is less productive hours.

Reading books has been my favorite pass time. One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the best that I read in 2012. Other books that I really liked are Poor little rich slum by Rashmi Bansal, Dreams from my father by Barack Obama, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, Tamarind City by Bhiswanath Ghosh, The idea man by Paul Allen, Absolute Khuswant by Kushwant Singh and Mafia queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi.

I haven’t read much in Tamil except for a few collections of essays by Sujatha and S. Ramakrishnan. I started to read Kaval Kottam by Su. Venkatesan and could not complete it. It had won sahitya academy award for literature.

I made sure that I polished my shoes every day I left for office.  I completed one year in my new job. I missed a lot of movies. I have started to realize the importance of planning ahead and spending wisely. I am still exploring a means for an alternate source of income. I finally managed to escape credit card mess that I had gotten in to. I wrote very less.

As for Twenty Thirteen – I am going to take a few calculated risks.
